Major Introduction

The Department of Japanese Language and Literature was initiated in March 1992 with a night time program and affiliated with College of Humanities in 1999 changing into a day time. There are 7 full-time professors, including 4 Korean and 3 Japanese professors as of 2018, and various courses are open to students. The Department provides courses such as Japanese conversation, writing to improve practical Japanese language skills as well as special topics on Japanese, Japanese literature, phonetics to nurture specialists in Japanese. In addition, it seeks to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding about Japanese society by studying Japanese culture, lifestyle, history, etc. The Department has its own characteristics; first, it actively involves in foreign exchange programs with Japanese universities by running exchange students programs, short-term training program and exchange music festivals with the universities in sisterhood relationships; second, student activities are facilitated, as plays and songs are performed in Japanese in annual festivals and Japanese culture clubs are open to those who are interested in Japan; third, local residents are also invited to the Festival in May with traditional Japanese entertainments and foods prepared where local people can experience Japanese culture along with students. Being over 50 years after the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea (2015), the roles and responsibilities that the Department should assume are increasing.
